Anyway I suggest to upgrade if you must move to 8i (anyway you need to migrate).

8i is quite stable on AIX, but since all is on production you will never know if it will work completely. We have just migrated a server from 8i to 10g, we expected blood, it took 4 hours to re-compile all and to set paths and remove old libraries. Be positive and tell to your manager that a migration (done with a valuable Oracle Expert) can save downtime and absence of support of 8.0.5 or 8i fails (obviously also money!).

If the version is linked to Oracle Applications ask to Oracle, they do it every day and a question on Oracle Metalink can help you to get a better decision together with Oracle Experts. I know Oracle 8.1.7.4 in not supported by Oracle and yes to all who will say that one should upgrade to stay current, but that is not always possible.

It is not applicable (also because it is unsupported). We tried and it is not possible to install it no AIX 5.3 (except if don't care about support and you like to have an unstable system). My personal suggestion is to migrate to a most recent version.
