Hello, How do you open a PRN file to see how it converted? I only want to open the document to see how it converted, not print it. I used Windows XP and Microsoft Word 2003 and would create a PRN file by PRINT TO FILE/GENERIC-TEXT ONLY Printer. Then I would open the document in Word 2003 and could see how the document converted.

I bought a new computer with Windows 7x64 bit and Microsoft Office 2010 and now when I follow the same steps to create a PRN file I cannot open the document in Word 2010 to see the converted document. Please provided step-by-step instructions if there are any suggestions/solutions.

This is vague answer! Ok Microsoft Windows Command prompt info like 60pages.prn >Microsoft Windows Command prompt info that aught to do it according to you! You assume too much. Frankly I dont kow why.prn files created in Windows do not open under standard windows apps without hoop jumping, PS, PCL dont matter hummmm vague again. This should just work opening.prn files without having to hunt down a 3rd party app - should have just made it print to PDF by default but no I have to install/hoop jump to get this file corrected. Guess I'll wait for windows 10/X.

Thanks for trying. J 4040 assembler.

Hello, I was facing the same issue with Windows 10 - wanted to print PRN file and couldn't get it to work. It didn't work for me with MS Document Imaging also. The app couldn't open PRN files. Just now I printed the documents though with MS Command Prompt (cmd). I got my info from here: I had to add a work around because I'm having a WiFi printer (not USB or even LPT: as in linked page).

This should also work for printers connected via ethernet cable. Here is what I did: 1. Work around ->share WiFi/LAN printer: go to 'Devices and Printers', open Printer Properties and share printer (tip: use simple share name to avoid typos later on e.g.

I used 'Xerox') 2. Open Command Prompt ->go to windows search and type 'cmd'. Open 'Command Prompt' 3. Navigate to the folder containing your PRN files OR simply copy your PRN to your user home folder because this is the initial folder of cmd at app start e.g. C: Users Ulrich - no need to navigate anywhere.

In case you don't know the IP address of your computer ->type 'ipconfig' in the cmd and press enter. The address at entry 'IPv4 Address' is the one we need in the next step (mine was 192.168.1.138). Type command 'copy /B [filename.prn] [IP of your computer] [printer share name - see step 1]' e.g. 'copy /B elp2.prn 192.168.1.138 Xerox' If everything is fine the printer should start working immediately after hitting enter.

Good luck!:). Dear LordBullington: You have been very helpful and I do appreciate your answer. Unfortunately, I don't want to print this file. I don't know how it became a PRN file in the first place. It should have been a simple DOCX file and I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what happened here.

Also, while I'm not a complete dummy, I am not as advanced as you and you lost me on some of this. Proforma Software 3d. I will try again (sigh) but can you tell me how to convert this file to doc or docx? It is over 100 pages long and I need to edit it and continue adding to it, so printing it doesn't help me much unless I am to just retype it. OMG I hope not!

Thank you kind Lord!
