Looking for suggestions on a solid Technics deck. More concerned with playback than record features, and a single deck is okay. Thanks in advance! I've had a few Technics decks.

Very recently I acquired a RS-B48R and an M234X. The RS-B48R is a dual capstan auto reverse deck with Dolby B,C and DBX. The M 234X is a single capstan deck and has Dolby B, C and DBX as well. Of the two decks I think the RS-B48R is the better sounding.

However both decks sound very nice. Both are made well were made in 1983 and 1984 right in the middle of the cassette golden age. Here's the two decks. Your primary concern will be to locate a deck that WORKS. That should be very easy to do. Technics decks are easily found for almost nothing in terms of $ cost.

Ebay search: technics (all categories) Ebay search: technics tape (all categories) ***Never Consider Any Seller With Less Than 100% ebay rating, unless they have over one thousand transactions and a 99.9 or at worst 99.8 rating!** Make certain that the seller has expressly stated in writing within the e-bay ad that the deck works and is fully functional/operational. You are purchasing an old piece of electronics in AS IS condition. NEVER BID ON ANYTHING THAT STATES: powers up, no way to test it, as I do not have cassettes, or no way to hook up to test it, or I don't know anything about it, purchased at junk sale or found at the dump or next to my neighbors garbage pile------NEVER BID on stuff like that Unless you are a capable repair technician that likes repairing junk, because odds are it likely has problems. ALWAYS look at the stated/or calculated shipping cost as some screwball sellers will list an extremely high shipping cost, that might only be worthwhile if you win it with a 0.99 bid or less.

Most people listing an old Technics deck might be an original owner, just trying to clear out all their old analog stereo gear. Their isn't a huge demand for most quality namebrand cassette decks, so you can find plenty for next to nothing if you really look.

If you do go the ebay route, always use Paypal and only purchase from those with 100% ratings and a minimum of 7 or more transactions, preferably over 20. NEVER EVER consider somebody with a 98 rating or lower, as you're likely asking for problems. 100% rating always unless they have over 1000 transactions and then at least 99.9 or worst 99.8% rating. There are too many of these Technics decks around to deal with fools/screwballs' ebay sellers. Stick with the best ebay sellers only. You're not looking for some one of a kind rare item that only one person has.

Check that should give you some info on some models you might come across. Lots of old Technics are great.

RS-M270X from (1981 sept '81 Playboy full page advert) here is a basic 227X that has cool looking Needle VU meters I do own a 227X that I've had for about 30 years and several others like a RS-M240X and others including a RS-B50. The B-50 looks a lot like Lance's B48 but isn't as nice (no auto rev). Convert Cobol Data Files. Just look around, check ebay, goodwill, thrifts, someone you know may have an old deck tecnics deck that they aren't using and will give it to ya. I've had a few Technics decks.

I'm not that big on Technics gear anymore but those are sweet looking units. I've only had poor experiences with Technics/Panny cassette decks.

Had three over the years from the 80s, model 215 and similar I think - motor drive IC failed on each one! Latest doorstop was a dual well deck from the early 90s, crappy plastic clutch gears broke. Even their shoeboxand radio- cassette players were crap - many from about 1978-80 had a stupid design with a small record button combined in a larger play key so you are guaranteed to accidentally erase at least one tape. Also plastic failure on pinch roller linkages (not repairable), etc.
